Net zero emissions by 2030

Nordion Energi specialises in energy infrastructure and is focusing our efforts on creating a sustainable and flexible energy system that is fit for the future; one where electricity, gas and heat interact. One of our priority sustainability issues is to actively drive the transition to net zero emissions.

Our focus on reducing our negative climate impact also includes broader efforts to minimise our overall environmental impact. Nordion Energi is constantly striving for continuous improvement of our operations, and we comply with legislation, environmental requirements and energy system requirements. We use the most eco-friendly and energy-efficient technologies possible and ensure efficient maintenance work. We are also increasing our understanding of the life cycle impact of our products and using this information in our improvement work.

Net Zero 2030 – how it works

In 2022, we managed to reduce CO2e emissions by 27.5% within scope 1 and 2 from the base year 2021. Our special focus for many years has been to minimise methane emissions, as this is the largest source of our emissions. Through various initiatives, we reduced methane emissions by 50% between 2019 and 2022 and are now implementing new initiatives to reduce emissions further.

The second largest emission source in our operation is the utility vehicles used for various work-related trips. In 2022, we introduced new procedures and decided that all our vehicles should have the least possible negative environmental impact. We have committed to Fossil Free Sweden’s Transport Challenge concerning fossil-free road transport by 2030.

Purchased energy for electricity and heating are other sources of emissions. The gas transported in the Swedegas high-pressure system needs to be heated by a gas-fired boiler, something that the Weum distribution grid does not require. Since 2019, the boiler system has run on certified sustainable biogas.

Energy losses in the electricity grid need to be compensated. The goal is for all purchased supporting electricity to bear the Good Environmental Choice label, and in 2022, 100% of electricity bore the Good Environmental Choice label. SF6 gas, which has a global warming potential that is significantly higher than carbon dioxide, is used as an insulation medium in certain equipment within the electricity grid. We have decided to use SF6-free equipment as far as possible within new- and reconstruction.
