Liquefied biogas – LBG

Liquefied biogas will play a crucial role in achieving climate goals in the transport sector. Nordion Energi plays an active role in the development of the necessary infrastructure – among other things, we are running a project for a liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg to convert biogas into liquefied biogas.

Liquefied biogas (LBG) is biogas that has been cooled down. Heavy road transport and shipping currently depend on fossil fuels. The use of liquefied biogas as a fuel reduces levels of nitrogen oxides (NOX) and harmful particles – and thus contributes to a reduced impact on health and the environment. The liquefied biogas can also be efficiently transported to industries that do not have access to a gas grid.

The liquefaction plant at the Port of Gothenburg is scheduled to become operational in 2026 and will be the first of its kind to be directly connected to the western Swedish gas grid. 250 GWh of biogas will be condensed here every year. The plant, including tank storage, will be located in the area for activities already subject to a permit at Skarvik 4 at the Port of Gothenburg.

Liquefied biogas is currently the cleanest marine fuel on the market. Large volumes and a well-developed infrastructure are required to manage the climate transition.
